The news is out over on the Office Communications Server Team Blog - the next release of OCS requires a 64 Bit OS (x64). For OCS this makes a lot of sense – as X64 enables significantly more memory to be allocated. However, there are some real downsides for OCS 2007 customers as there’s no direct upgrade path – you need a new OS install then a fresh install of OCS 2007 R2. I wish MS had announced this externally several months ago when they actually made the decision.
MS has also announced shipping of the beta for OCS R2 although as of this morning, it’s not available on TechNet or MSDN. Hopefully soon.
