Type Accelerators and TypePx

Last week, I updated some earlier scripts related to Type Accelerators over on my PshScripts blog – and I've had some great feedback. Kirk Munro (@Poshoholic on twitter and all around PowerShell superstar) pointed out there is a TypePX module he's published to GitHub.

As to be expected of anything Kirk touches, the TypePX module is rich and well implemented. His module is production ready – so you could easily copy it to your modules folder and start to use it. The TypePx functions are pipeline friendly and have good error handling.

What I've published is much more simple and designed for a different audience. The whole idea of what I published, and indeed the whole point of my PshScripts blog, is to illustrate simple concepts, apis, etc in a simple script. In this case, the essence of type accelerators is wrapped up in a few lines of code. This is what I strive to publish in Pshscripts – showing you how to do one thning simply (per script!). What Kirk publishes is enterprise grade production scripting. I readily admit they are different – but I'd like to think there is room for both. One ofr learning with, one for using in production.

New Blog Layouts For My Blogs

I've had two blogs on BlogSpot (both before and after the take over by Google!): this blog (aka Under The Stairs) and a PowerShell Script blog. Until recently, the format of these two blogs has been pretty static. But promoted by a couple of comments, I've updated the layout of both blogs. Both blogs are now a bit wider and both use new templates.

An issue with the PowerShell scripts blog is that the formatter I was using also used an online CSS. Sadly, both the site and the CSS object are gone – more Internet goodness that is impermanent. I have switched over to a new formatter, but it's going to take some time to get around to fixing all of the post. I've done a few, but there are around 300 more to do! Eventually!

I'd be happy to get comments about the blog. Has anyone actually noticed?

PSHSCripts.Blogspot.Com – 2 years On!

Just over 2 years ago, I created a new blog, The PowerShell Scripts blog over at http://pshscripts.blogspot.com. The idea was simple – a blog with single function PowerShell scripts. Scripts that demonstrated one (or at least a very small number) of things to do with PowerShell. I had in mind that since the blog was hosted by Google, they’d do a good job of indexing it, and providing links to it. Which is exactly what happened.
In the two years, I’ve had over 65,000 visitors to the blog. At present, I’m getting around 170 hits per day and just under 300 page hits per day on average over a week. However, this is very much a week day blog with Monday-Friday tending to be closer to 200+ hits/day during the week.
But the interesting, and gratifying, thing is the percentage of hits coming from the key search engines (Google and more recently Bing) and the search terms they are using. I’ve used a free traffic counter from sitemeter to measure the traffic, but I only see the last 1000 visitors and had not added a more permanent tracking system – but I’ve recently added Google Analytics the site. So far, the results from both sites show the same tends.
Looking at the Analytic's output for the past month. around 70% of all the traffic to the blog comes from Google and Bing with a bit more from PowerShell.com, TechNet and this blog. There are a few other search engines that send traffic, but Google and Bing are dominant.  Also, around 13% of the traffic comes from direct hits on http://pshscripts.blogspot.com.
Looking at the search terms used is also interesting. PowerShell Scripts (and PowerShell script) make up 18% or all hits. Below those two, there’s a very long tail of relatively low numbers of hits over the past month. There were just around 1000 separate search terms used – and all but a handful more than once or twice. That shows that the narrow focus of each post has proven useful – you can search with a fairly narrow term, such as “PowerShell ipaddress wmi” or “powershell send udp” and see the blog at the top or near the top of the 1st page.
There were two discoveries that were curious. First, looking at the referring sites, I noticed one site had a relatively high number of pages per visit and a long time too on average time on site. The bounce rate for this traffic was also very very low. It turns out that an IT professor in Viet Nam has put a link to my blog and all the slides from the upcoming PowerShell V2 class. Not sure about the legality of putting the slides up – but see for yourself at http://hoanguyen40.ecoles.officelive.com/OSScripting.aspx.
The other amusing thing I found is that, when looking at the networks that send you traffic (think ISP). The top network listed was Microsoft!
All in all, a good first two years for this blog – getting several hundred hits a day is more than I expected.

Communications Server ‘14’ Powershell Blog Up And Running

The Communications Server ‘14’ team have put up a CS and Powershell blog. You can read it at http://blogs.technet.com/b/csps/. It’s early days, as CS14 was finally revealed to the world (with no NDA!) here in New Orelans TechEd North America. Speaking to the PowerShell PM, the intention is for the blog to be a one-stop shop for all CS14 and PowerShell. I look forward to seeing how this evolves!

Windows Management Infrastructure Blog

The WMI team are now blogging in the Windows Management Infrastructure Blog. A most useful blog for those wanting to understand WMI (and BITS, and WINRM) especially those coming to this from a PowerShell point of view. One interesting post examines the WMI story, pre Windows 7 (with lots of great links to more background). Another post looks at what is coming with WMI in Windows 7 (i.e. with PowerShell V2).

This blog is well written! And any blog that can mix PowerShell, reindeers, Jedis, ands and grasshoppers can’t be all bad!

Blogging in 2008

In 2008, I spent a lot of time blogging, both here in Under The  Stairs, and on my PowerShell scripts blog (http://pshscripts.blogspot.com) and my corporate blog (http://cacorner.blogspot.com). The first two of these blogs had a lot of PowerShell content (especially the PowerShell Scripts blog which was all PowerShell).

Traffic varied a bit over the year, but really picked up in the autumn, as follows:

As this table shows, I had more traffic towards the end of the year, which I attribute to posting more. I was motivated by what I saw at TechEd to up my level of posting, which has paid off in more traffic.

The PowerShell Scripts blog was started in July. However from Aug-September, it did not see much traffic mainly because I was did not post during those months. (due to being pretty busy with my day job).

With the release of PowerShell V2 CTP3, interest in the new features has driven a  lot of traffic to both blogs. And with the newly released Windows 7 betas, I hope this interest will continue.

Pipes: PowerShell Bloggers – Broken?

Jaykul has created a pretty cool Yahoo Pipe application (PowerShell Bloggers). However, today it seems to be not working – I am getting the error message: The Pipes engine request failed (504). :-(

This is a shame as the application is pretty useful in keeping up with PowerShell bloggers. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.

[Later]

It’s now working again! And along with it is the news that today should see CTP 3! Yeah!!

Steve Dunn's Code Formatter for Windows Live Writer Breaks New Live Writer Version

I use the code formatter from Steve Dunn's web site to format code on my PowerShell Scripts Blog. Having just updated my main workstation to use the latest version of Windows Live Writer, I find the current version of the formatting tool (1.0.0.4) now breaks using the latest version of  Live Writer.

Until I find a fix, I am falling back on the On-line Syntax Highlighter tool I posted about yesterday.

[Later]

I’ve had mail from Steve – he’s found the problem and will have a fix up shortly. What great service – thanks!!
